Why count birds?

Swedish bird survey runs several different international monitoring programs, a number of them are included in the national environmental survey and are financed by the Swedish Environmental protection agency. Approximately 1,000 birdwatchers help each year with conducting surveys, but there is room for more. What kind of surveys are there, who can help, what do the results show and what are they used for – all will be revealed in this presentation.

Fredrik Haas works as a researcher for the Swedish bird survey, Lund University. Birdwatching has been his great interest since he was young, when he took his inexpensive binoculars and stated to watch birds in the area around Kramfors in Ångermanland county. Since then, much water has gone under the bridge and the flow has taken him to jobs at bird observatories, jobs in the field inside and outside of Sweden and to studies of speciation in birds.
